Hymenoplasty
Conveniently located to serve Houston and Sugar Land
Hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure that repairs a torn hymen. Triple board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Daisy Ayim has advanced training and vast experience with this procedure, as well as an unwavering dedication to her patients. This unique combination of traits has earned her distinction as a top provider of hymenoplasty in Houston.
What Is Hymenoplasty?
A hymenoplasty, or hymenorrhaphy, is performed to restore the hymen. The hymen is a ring-shaped membrane that partially covers the vaginal opening.
In the past, a torn hymen was considered evidence that a woman had had sexual intercourse and was no longer a virgin. However, a torn hymen can result from many non-sexual activities, such as playing sports or using tampons.
An intact hymen is still considered an indication of virginity in certain cultures and religions. Restoring the appearance of virginity for religious or cultural reasons is most often the reason a woman chooses to undergo a hymenoplasty.
Am I a Candidate?
Dr. Ayim can determine your candidacy for hymenoplasty in a private consultation. The consultation involves a physical exam, review of your medical history, and a discussion of your treatment goals.
As hymen repair requires surgery, candidates must be non-smokers who are in good general health. Women under the age of 18 are typically not good candidates for this procedure.
What to Expect During Hymenoplasty Surgery
Dr. Ayim will perform your hymenoplasty in an accredited surgical facility. Most hymenoplasty procedures take about 30 minutes, though the duration of your surgery will depend on the complexity of your specific procedure.
Based on what is best for you, local or general anesthesia will be used to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Your legs will be in stirrups for the surgery.
Dr. Ayim will first identify the fragments of the hymen. She can then remove uneven tissue and suture the hymen fragments together, which results in a smaller vaginal opening. In some cases, a tissue graft may be needed for optimal results.
Hymenoplasty Recovery: What to Know
Dr. Ayim will provide comprehensive aftercare instructions to guide you through your hymenoplasty recovery. These instructions will include information on:
- How to care for the treatment site
- How to take the prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection
- When to return to the office for a follow up appointment
Though the healing process can take two to four weeks, most patients only need one or two days of downtime after hymen repair surgery. Some discomfort, bruising, swelling, and/or light bleeding can occur during hymenoplasty recovery. These symptoms can be relieved with pain medication as prescribed by Dr. Ayim.
Strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks. Additionally, patients should not use tampons or insert anything into the vagina until advised by Dr. Ayim.
How Much Does a Hymenoplasty Cost?
The cost of hymen repair surgery depends on the techniques required for your unique procedure as well as the duration of the surgery. You will be able to review pricing details and ask any questions you may have in your consultation.
